Dubai, an emirate of the UAE is a favorite tourist hotspot which not only boasts of its towering architecture, but also houses numerous natural reserves. Amongst the many is the Ras Al Khor Bird Sanctuary located at the mouth of the famous Dubai Creek. The Dubai Creek run right through the middle of Dubai city and allows a magnificent view of both old and new part of the city.

Background:
The Dubai Creek leads surprising to a stretch of land where birds, especially flamingos are spotted in abundance. The reserve is also commonly known as Cape of the Creek which is the Arabic translation of the reserve’s name. The sanctuary is a natural wetland and has a stark presence amongst the busy urban backdrop. Thousands of migrating birds flock to this place every year which is a spectacular sight.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Dubai Municipality collaborated to fund and protect the wetland reserve in order to house the thousands of migrating birds from all over the world. Three hides were built for the birds in the reserve’s vicinity. These hides were funded by the National Bank of Dubai. The expansive wetland has natural vegetation and also houses several small mammals.
Location:
The reserve lies on the north eastern part of Dubai and the total area is about 13 square kilometres. The sight of hundreds of birds lazing in the waters of the creek sets a striking sight against the towering sky scrapers in the background.
How to reach:
The reserve can be reached in less than an hour via the Dubai Creek. A traditional dhow can also be availed for a traditional experience. Dubai has an excellent transport system which connects the entire city via public transport and has an international airport connected to the entire world. Cars can be rented from the city to the spot as well.
Best Time for Visit:
Best time to visit this place is between December and March. Operating hours are between 9:00 am to 4:00 pm every day, except Friday which is a holiday. Entry to the reserve is absolutely free. To watch the feeding of the birds, one must reach between 9:00- 9:30 am.
Major attractions:
The reserve houses several species of birds, majority of which are migrating birds. Famous amongst the many are the flamingos which attract attention even from a distance. Amongst the greater flamingos are spotted the Snowy plover, Asian pied myna, Bulbul, Heron, Little green bee eater, Silverbill to name just a few species. The place is a treat for nature lovers and wild life photographers. It is a treat to see the flamingos flock in hundreds and the occasional surprise spotting of other exotic birds.
After spending time in the reserve, one can take a cruise through the Dubai Creek and back to the main city.
A camera is a must to capture the beauty of this amazing reserve. Also a binocular is recommended to watch the birds in action at a distance. It is best advisable to wear comfortable light clothes during summer and light woollens during winter. There are no eateries or shops nearby, thus it is best to carry water and snacks for the visit. Sunscreen and hats are much needed during the hot summer months.
